SumMAT Day Camps

SUMmer Mountain Adventure Training

May 15 Update

We're all slowly accepting that summer camp 2020 will look and feel a bit different, but we are committed to bringing our campers and families valuable experiences. Camps play a vital role for kids and for our community, and we will be approaching this summer with vigilance, creative planning, and safety as our highest priority. Our conditions- much like the weather or changing water conditions that we are familiar with constantly evaluating- are changing weekly, even daily, as we adapt to what our world is going through. We will face these changes with communication, and our goal is for you, the camp families, to feel like you are informed and that we're preparing you better than ever for your week at camp.

We are incredibly thankful for the many supportive comments we have received regarding the strong camp culture that we have built over the past 20 years. THANK YOU-- you are what makes SumMAT Camp an amazing place for kids to gain confidence, bonds and experiences that stick with them for a lifetime. And for those who are choosing to step away this summer; we understand, we will miss you, and we will see you when you're ready.

On May 8, the Scott Administration announced that "summer camps are a go" and on May 13, the Vermont Department of Health released Heath Guidance for childcare & summer programs (attached), effective June 1. While this was an exciting announcement, we need to approach this very carefully, and we will be planning for some significant changes to our camp rules, logistics, and activities. Per the VDH Guidelines:

  • Camp staff and gym staff, at this time, are required to wear masks while in the camp setting.
  • It is recommended that campers wear cloth facial coverings, but it is not required. We will have exceptions for activities that naturally put a distance between children. If there is a safety concern for those wearing them, we will adjust as necessary, always monitoring.  Some parents will choose to have their kids wear them, and we will mitigate all judgement that comes with that; we will be more vigilant about distancing for those who are not wearing masks.
  • It is also recommended that parents/guardians wear face covers when dropping off and picking up children at camp.
  • Temperature screenings and health questions will be conducted each day for campers and staff. Campers should not have come into contact with a COVID-19 positive individual, and should not have symptoms of respiratory illnesses.
  • Children who arrive from out-of-state must quarantine for 7 days, then be tested as COVID-19 negative, or quarantine for 14 days without testing.
  • Physical distancing is the best way to slow the spread of the virus. Mixing between groups will be discouraged.
  • Hand washing and/or hand sanitizing will be regularly implemented.
  • Common areas and frequently touched surfaces will be regularly disinfected, and we will be limiting the sharing of supplies and equipment.

We will also have some significant changes to our camp outings. With the challenges presented by transportation and close physical proximity during some camp activities, we will be working on ways to make them more accessible. This may mean changing locations of activities, or changing the activities themselves. No matter what we're doing, our amazing camp staff brings safety, adventure, education and fun to the activity.

We will continue to keep this page current with any camp specific updates. Thank you for hanging in there with us as we adapt to our changing environment. Please let us know if you have any questions-- email is the best way at this time.

Thank you,

Cate Beebe & Andrea Charest

In a SumMAT Day Camp

Each day presents a new experience! Our base camp is Petra Cliffs, and from there we go every which way for a variety of awesome adventures. Our groups are age-specific and small, but our adventures are huge! Join SumMAT Camp for exciting adventures, healthy activities, and summer fun!

Groups are a maximum of 10 campers with two leaders, plus one specialist for rock climbing, kayaking and sailing. All groups participate in the same activities, with the exception of the youngest group, Group 1; they go sailing in collaboration with the Community Sailing Center, as smaller kids have a harder time with our kayaks and paddles. Locations of activities may vary based on group ability and returning campers. Here is what the campers do each week:

  • Indoor rock climbing, ropes course, teambuilding and games
  • Outdoor rock climbing
  • Outdoor ropes course at the Bolton Adventure Center
  • Caving
  • Group 1 (youngest): Sailing; Groups 2-5: Kayaking
  • Click for more descriptions of each activity

Day Camps are geared toward both the beginner and the camper with some experience. Our leaders present new challenges whenever possible to keep activities fresh and exciting, whether that means visiting a new location, having a camper try harder rock climbing routes, trying to surf a wave while kayaking, or trying an activity with a new twist.

Our Staff

Our staff members are students, teachers, and responsible, highly trained, adventure-loving leaders. They share a respect for the natural world and areas we visit with campers, and they teach skills and safety in every activity during SumMAT Camp.  Petra Cliffs began background checks in 2013 to put parents' minds at ease and to exceed the Vermont state standard for summer camps (even though we have had nothing but good experiences with our staff in the past).  Staff are all Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder and CPR certified; many have additional certifications.
