Member Spotlight: Chris (Critter) Furlani

Tell us a bit about yourself. Where do you live, what do you like to do?

I currently live in Winooski, Vermont. I grew up in Colchester, Vermont and attended the University of Vermont, where I studied physical education. I work at Akes’ Place, a sports bar on Church Street. I also flip houses and dabble in woodworking on the side. Growing up, I was either outside climbing on something in the summer, or in a rink playing hockey in the winter. But, as soon I became a member of the Petra Cliffs community, a love for rock climbing began!

Do you remember the first time you stepped in Petra?

The first time I stepped into Petra, I was probably 10 years old. I was as excited as any 10 year old would be when walking into a rock climbing gym, and I think I still get just as excited today!

When did you start climbing and when did you become a member of Petra?

I didn’t start climbing consistently until about 5 years ago which is around the time I became a member.

Do you have anything exciting happening for the summer/fall?

I will be buying my first house this fall and making the move from Winooski to Burlington.

Do you have any favorite routes, either in VT or elsewhere?

I’ve only been outside a few times but I’m looking forward to getting out much more in the near future! Having said that, there are definitely a few classic gym routes that stick out in my mind.

What has it been like being a part of the Petra Community?

Awesome! I started off fairly independent at Petra, but it didn’t take long to start making friends with the amazing staff and regular climbers there. They have established a really fun and exciting community from their youth programs to their adult climbing clinics and countless member/community events.

What's a fun fact that many other Petra Members might not know about you?

I’m a certified scuba diver!
