Member Spotlight: Andrew Peters

If you've been to Petra Cliffs, it's very likely that you've run into Andrew. He lives right around the corner from the gym and spends a lot of time climbing, chatting, and helping out. His favorite icebreaker question is "How are the handholds?" We are excited to tell you a little more about him!

Tell us a bit about yourself. Where do you live, what do you like to do?
I was born in Burlington and I live just around the corner from Petra Cliffs. I went to Burlington High School.

I worked on homes right after I got out of high school in 1986. I gutted out the insides and did demolition for 6 years. That led into a job painting houses for about 9 years. Then I started landscaping! One of my most fun jobs was working on race cars in 2002 for 8 years with Barney. I traveled with him and raced all over. Louden, Maine, Limerock. Now I help out in St. Anthony's in the thrift shop hall. I also help the band Quadra band set up their stage & lighting. And at Petra Cliffs, I help with anything they need to trade for my membership: cleaning, routesetting, whatever they need.

Do you remember the first time you stepped in Petra Cliffs?
Oh yeah. It was the day it opened or maybe before it officially opened. I came in to check it out and see if I could help out. The original owner, Chip, gave me my first harness & chalk bag after I proved myself on the wall! My first first time climbing I got to the top of the overhanging back wall in sneakers.

Do you prefer rope climbing or bouldering?
Ropes-- top roping, although I can lead belay and lead climb.  I like small holds, and my goal is to continue improving balance & movement

You just came back from a trip to Florida, can you tell us about that? Any favorite moments?
I’m usually there from October through mid April, this year I was there for 6 weeks longer-- it got hot! I played lots of golf, tennis and pickleball. I’m glad to be back, but I was bored when Petra Cliffs was closed!

What do you value most about being part of the Petra Cliffs community, especially during this current state of the Coronavirus?
I like all the people and I like to help out. Climbing is fun, and I like to meet nice people. I met John, my longest climbing partner, at Petra Cliffs, way back in the beginning.

Do you have anything exciting planned for this upcoming summer?
My brother Mike is planning to come up. We’ll golf at Vermont National golf club & Lang Farm when he does.

What's one thing you're looking forward to in Petra 2.0?
Air conditioning!

What's a fun fact that many other Petra Members might not know about you?
I am a Knight of Columbus. Our motto is “In service to One, in service to All.” Two summers ago I earned my sword.

Thanks Andrew! Make sure to chat him up next time you see him in the gym. Andrew loves to make friends!
