BURLINGTON & SMUGGLER’S NOTCH, VT- The Smuggler’s Notch Ice Bash promotes the sport of ice climbing, educates beginners to advanced climbers, exhibits and demos new gear, and shares a weekend of fun, challenge, and inspiration with other winter enthusiasts in one of Vermont’s most amazing places- Smuggler’s Notch. The public is invited to take part in clinics and attend some of the most exciting events in the region during this weekend.
This year the Smuggs Ice Bash hosts its 10th year of the festival, celebrating Vermont’s rich history in winter climbing, which began in the early 1950’s. The festival’s ice climbing clinics teach beginners (no climbing experience necessary) to intermediate and advanced climbers looking to improve their technique, knowledge and experience with professional guides from Petra Cliffs Mountaineering School and Guest Guides from all over the Northeast. This weekend is one of the most affordable ways to get a taste of the sport, with the use of free gear from top brands like Mammut, Black Diamond, Petzl, Grivel, Dry Ice Tools, Rab, Outdoor Research, DMM, La Sportiva, and more. It’s also one of the most fun ways to try out the sport, with events happening throughout the weekend and others sharing in the bonding experience of swinging ice axes and kicking crampons into frozen waterfalls.

“Ice climbing is a way to get outside and moving in the winter, and to experience a new part of Vermont’s beauty- from the side of a frozen waterfall! Guides prioritize safety, teach how to swing ice axes and kick the crampons efficiently and gracefully, and they’re entertainers too- teaching funny ways to stay warm, the history of Smuggler’s Notch, and so much more. This is my favorite weekend of the year!” ~Andrea Charest, Petra Cliffs Co-Owner & Guide
