Two-Day Intro to Trad Climbing Course

Tired of clipping bolts on lead and ready to add some excitement to your climbing? Or is there some ultra-classic climb you really want to do but it requires an understanding of traditional protection in order to climb it safely? This 2-day course introduces you to the complexities of active and passive protection for rock climbing.

Learn how to place, evaluate and understand the intricate technique of placing your own protection on climbs. You will be introduced to active (cams) and passive (nuts, hexes, etc.) protection safely and efficiently. Begin to understand when and why you would need to place gear. Learn and/or review anchor construction with traditional protection suitable for top-roping or for redirecting a top-rope. The skills you begin to learn in this clinic will carry through into other forms of climbing including; mixed sport and traditional rock climbs, alpine climbing, ice and mixed climbing, and mountaineering.

This is an information filled two-days. By the second day, you may likely mock lead a route, set-up a top-rope anchor from traditional protection, or even possibly lead an easy, traditionally protected climb.

Prerequisites:
This clinic is best suited for participants with prior outside climbing experience and with a basic understanding of top-rope anchors and lead climbing techniques. If you have questions about if this course is a good fit for you please email outdoor@ petracliffs.com
