Types of Climbing

Each type of climbing available at Petra Cliffs is different in the personal equipment used, the method for protecting the climber, and for the orientation that climbers will need to undergo. Listed below are the basic options for beginning climbers: bouldering, autobelays, and toprope (belayed) climbing. Also listed is the length of the required orientation, the required and recommended gear (available to rent) and the other climbing styles that are included under the cost of a day pass.

Bouldering

Bouldering is one of the simplest forms of rock climbing. When bouldering, climbers climb shorter heights over special mats that are their only form of protection. Bouldering is a great way to get an introduction to the world of rock climbing at a low cost.

Orientation time: roughly 10 minutes

Recommended gear:

  • Climbing shoes

Autobelays

Autobelays are devices that will automatically catch and lower a climber back to the ground once they let go of the wall. They allow climbers to access a variety of climbs while still requiring very little technical skill. Autobelays are a great option for new climbers and families. Learn more about TruBlue Auto Belays

Toprope (belayed) climbing

Toprope climbing is done on a two sided rope connecting the climber on one side to the belayer on the other. It is the belayer’s job to keep the rope tight on the climber and to stop and lower the climber to the ground if they fall or once they have finished their climb. The orientation for toprope climbing requires a belay lesson at an additional fee.
