The Head Route Setter develops, organizes, and oversees route setting for Petra Cliffs. This position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the routes set on the climbing walls, which includes, but is not limited to: developing route setting staff, maintaining equipment, ensuring route quality, and making sure setting equipment is organized.

Equal time will be devoted to setting new routes on the main climbing walls as well as new problems on the bouldering walls. The head setter should be able to organize the gym so all abilities will enjoy their climbing experience. This person should also be able to manage the routes needed for events the facility hosts. This part-time position will grow to a full-time position in late 2019/early 2020 with the opening of a new facility. 

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Report to and collaborate with General Manager & Owners to determine route setting goals
  • Work with all Petra Cliffs staff members to identify potential setting conflicts with groups or events
  • Keep route setting equipment organized and in good working order
  • The Head Route Setter is responsible for maintaining and reporting old, broken, worn, malfunctioning, depleted, etc. equipment related to route setting
  • Ensure continued route quality (Spinning holds, tape missing, broken holds, etc.) and change routes that have inconsistent moves or that may cause injury.
  • Ensure that route setters are meeting all job expectations, and report those that are not to the GM
  • Work with GM to create, maintain, and adjust route setter schedules
  • Recruit, train, and develop new route setters
  • Scheduling and conducting appropriate trainings and professional development for experienced
  • route setters
  • Develop methods/programs to keep route setters motivated
  • Determine which walls will be stripped and set, and the number and difficulty of routes to be set
  • Learn the current system (modify if necessary) to ensure that routes/problems are changed frequently, and that route quality and diversity is maintained.
  • Learn current route tally system (modify if necessary) to be used as a reference when setting routes. The tally should include boulder, top rope, and lead routes.
  • Collaborate with the GM and Owners for seasonal bouldering competitions and other special events
  • Receive feedback from staff and customers to ensure participant satisfaction

Qualifications and Skills

  • Extensive indoor and outdoor rock climbing knowledge and experience
  • Ability to develop, implement and enforce climbing wall setting policies and procedures
  • Ability to develop and implement effective setting staff training procedures
  • Ability to safely supervise setters using the climbing wall
  • Previous group leadership experience 
  • Awareness of safety concerns and risk management involved with indoor climbing
  • Ability to set safe, high quality routes
  • Excellent oral and written skills
  • Climb 5.11+/ V6+ in order to be able ensure route quality
  • Extensive route setting experience, including setting for a climbing competition
  • Ability to take and give constructive criticism regarding routes
  • Have a good understanding of climbing movement
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Risk management experience, or willingness to learn.
  • Ability to set safe, high quality routes

Job Type: Part-time (20 hours) with potential for full-time within a year

Work Schedule: Flexible, includes weekends and evenings

Preferred certifications: USAC Level 1 Certification, CPR, First Aid
